How to Clean a Sex Doll Without Wrecking It: Wash, Dry, Powder

Heads up, I make a few bucks if you buy through my links. It doesn't change your price or what I tell you. How that works.

How to clean a sex doll: rinse her with lukewarm water, wash with a mild unscented soap or a doll cleaner, flush the canal until the water runs clear, then dry her completely, inside and out, before you dust on powder. Keep the neck joint and any electronics out of the water. Never use hot water, alcohol or bleach.

Most guys wash fine and then put her away damp. That’s what ruins dolls.

How to clean a sex doll after every use

Clean her after every use, no matter how short. Zelex says basic cleaning should happen after each use to prevent bacterial growth, plus a deep clean once a week even if she’s been sitting unused.

Here’s the routine, from what the makers publish:

  1. Power off and pull the electronics. If she has heating, voice or any smart feature, Irontech says to turn it off first and keep connectors, control modules and other non-waterproof parts out of the water.
  2. Take the head off, or keep it high and dry. One seller’s listing says flat out that “the doll neck joint can not be washed, otherwise, it will easily cause metal rust”.
  3. Rinse with lukewarm water. Irontech’s help centre says “Use lukewarm water (not hot)” and “Never use boiling water.” Don’t soak her unless the maker says she’s fully waterproof.
  4. Wash with a mild cleaner. Unscented soap or a doll cleaner, with your hand or a soft cloth.
  5. Get the folds. Fingers, toes, under the breasts, the backs of the knees. Fluids and dust collect in joints and creases.
  6. Rinse off every bit of soap. Don’t leave any film on the skin.
  7. Pat dry, then air dry. Pat with a soft towel. Zelex warns that rubbing hard can scratch the surface.

Cleaning the inside of a sex doll

Flush the canal with an irrigator or a squeeze bottle until the water comes out clear. That’s how Zelex and Irontech both describe it. Starpery says it puts vaginal cleaning tools in every package, so check the box before you buy one.

Squeeze in warm soapy water, let it drain, then repeat with plain water until it runs clean. Zelex finishes with a disinfectant spray made for doll channels. If you use one, read the label: no alcohol, no bleach.

What to use, and what to keep away from her

Use lukewarm water, a body-safe soap and a soft towel. Skip anything harsh, hot or oily. Here’s the list, with who says so.

Use Skip Source
Lukewarm or warm water Hot or boiling water Irontech, Zelex
Unscented soap or a doll cleaner Alcohol, bleach, strong detergents Irontech, Zelex
Soap you’d put on your own body Dish soap, heavily scented or oily soaps Bedsider
Soft towel, cotton swabs, soft brush Hard brushes, rubbing hard Zelex
Water-based lube Oil-based products Irontech
Fan or cool air to dry Heat Irontech

The soap row is from Bedsider, a sexual-health site: any type of soap you would use on your body, but no dish soap. Irontech’s maintenance page backs the lube row: water-based lube, nothing oil-based, and no strong solvents.

Starpery puts it in one line: dolls can be washed with water, “but definitely not organic matters, like oil, colors.” I read “colors” as dyed clothes, which can stain the skin. If it’s already happened, my sex doll stain guide has the fixes.

How to clean a TPE doll vs a silicone sex doll

The steps are the same. TPE just needs more powder and more patience. Most budget dolls I look at are TPE, a soft rubbery plastic. Silicone is firmer and costs more.

TPE Silicone
Can it be sanitized? No. Bedsider says porous materials like TPE can only be cleaned, “since you can’t know what’s below the surface” Bedsider lists silicone as nonporous, so it’s easier to keep clean
Powder after drying Yes, to keep it soft and not sticky Usually needs less, per Irontech’s cleaning page (linked above)

That oily feel on new TPE isn’t dirt. The softening oil isn’t chemically bonded in, so it migrates to the surface over time, faster with heat. Washing takes the film off for a while.

Dry both fully. TPE is less forgiving, because you can’t sanitize it. Haven’t bought yet? My TPE vs silicone breakdown covers the rest of the trade-off.

How to dry a sex doll: the bone-dry rule

Nothing goes back in storage until it’s bone dry, inside and out. That’s the bone-dry rule, and it’s how to prevent mold on a TPE sex doll.

Zelex and Irontech both say to dry thoroughly to prevent mold. And damp gets into the metal too: Irontech says rust on a neck joint is usually caused by moisture exposure over time.

  • Outside: pat dry with a soft towel, then let her air dry somewhere with airflow, out of direct sun.
  • Inside: this is where mold starts. Leave the canal open to the air. Roll a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel into the opening to wick out the water, and swap it until it comes out dry.
  • Time: no maker I checked gives a drying time. My rule is overnight for the canal before powder or storage. That’s my advice, not a spec.

If she smells musty after a few days in the closet, something stayed wet. Wash again, and dry longer.

Fans, blow-dryers and the outlet by the sink

A fan or cool air is fine. Heat isn’t, and the outlet matters. Irontech says a fan or low, cool air can speed up drying, but to avoid heat. So a blow-dryer on the cool setting, never hot.

Now my electrician part. If you dry her in the bathroom, you’re right next to the sink and the tub, and those outlets need ground-fault protection (GFCI). Canada’s CEC Rule 26-700(11) wants a Class A GFCI within 1.5 m (about 5 feet) of a sink, and the US NEC 210.8(A) covers all bathroom receptacles, per this electrical-safety article. It’s from 2010 and code editions change, so check the current one for your province or state.

Older places don’t always have one. My advice as an electrician: look for TEST and RESET buttons on the outlet and push TEST. The power should cut out. No buttons, or nothing happens? Don’t plug a dryer in near water. Get a plug-in GFCI adapter, or run the fan in the bedroom.

Don’t dry the inside with a heating rod either. Rods are for warming her before use, and the makers say to keep heat off. My guide to warming a doll safely covers rods and cords.

Drying tips from owners

Owners on Reddit say the canal is where it goes wrong, and one has a drying shortcut. These are owner tips from 2023 and 2025 threads, which I read in October 2026, not maker instructions.

One owner (u/bunnythefluff) on the canal:

“make sure it dries properly in between uses especially the internal holes because they can and will grow mould.”

The shortcut is an aquarium pump from a pet store. Another owner (u/Fauxgery) says a lot of people pick one up, and explains the setup:

“You can use a water pump and tube to clean inside the doll rather than carrying it into the shower, and an air pump to quickly dry the water inside rather than using drying sticks or waiting hours.”

That owner adds a catch: check what the tube is made of, because some tubing reacts badly with TPE. And both pumps plug into the wall, so the GFCI check above applies, doubly so for a water pump over a wet sink or tub. No maker I checked recommends either one. My verdict: worth it as an extra, not as a replacement for the overnight dry.

Timing is the other half. A commenter in a long sex toy safety thread (u/Otherwise-Memory-862) says the owners who do well clean right away, then powder once the toy is dry. That’s one person’s read, not a study. It lines up with the makers: wash tonight, not tomorrow.

Sex doll powder: cornstarch or talc?

Use plain cornstarch or the maker’s own powder. Powder goes on after she’s fully dry. It takes the tacky feel off TPE so the skin doesn’t grab and drag. Irontech says to use “renewal powder (like cornstarch or manufacturer powder).” Zelex lists talcum powder or corn starch.

I’d skip talc, and here’s why. The FDA says talc and asbestos can occur close together in the ground, so there’s a potential for talc to be contaminated with asbestos, which the same page calls a known carcinogen when inhaled.

In FDA testing, 9 of 52 talc cosmetic samples tested positive for asbestos in its year-long 2019 assignment. The FDA warned that those products weren’t a random sample of the market. In its 2023 testing, asbestos wasn’t found in any of the 50 samples.

The recent numbers look better, but cornstarch is in every grocery store and doesn’t raise the question. You’ll breathe some of whatever you shake around. That’s my reasoning, not medical advice, so take health questions to your doctor.

Dust it on lightly with a soft brush or your hand. Don’t powder inside a canal that’s still damp, or you’re making paste.

Cleaning a torso vs a full-size in a small apartment

A torso is a quick rinse in the shower. A full-size is a project. That’s the real cleaning difference between the types, and it’s a big reason I point first-timers at a torso doll.

A torso fits in a shower tray, held with one arm and rinsed with the other. Going by the listings in my doll weight guide, a torso runs 27 to 61 lb (12 to 28 kg). Starpery says a removable vagina is easier to clean, but it can make the doll less lifelike and the part tears more easily. On a fixed one, the irrigator does the work.

A full-size from 5’2” to 5’8” runs 71 to 106 lb (32 to 48 kg) in the same listings, and you’re lifting that in and out of a tub while she’s wet and slippery. No tub means a sponge bath on towels on the floor, and a full-size is a pain in the ass that way every time.

In a small apartment, drying space is the other problem. She needs airflow overnight, not a closet. Once she’s dry, see my notes on storing a doll for hanging her or laying her flat.

The mistake most guys make

They put her away when the outside is dry. A towel gets the skin, not the canal. Water sits inside, the neck joint got splashed, and over time you get a musty smell or rust on the neck joint. Dry the canal before storage, every time.

The second mistake is grabbing whatever’s under the sink. Bleach, alcohol and dish soap are all on the skip list in the table above. That’s how a damn good doll gets ruined by a cheap cleaner.

FAQs

Do I need to wash my new sex doll?

Yes, before first use. Wash a new doll inside and out with lukewarm water and mild soap, then dry her gently with a soft towel. A new TPE doll often feels a bit oily because the softening oil migrates to the surface. That’s normal. Wash any clothes that came with her too, because dyes can stain the skin.

What soap do you use to clean sex dolls?

A mild, unscented soap you’d use on your own body, or a cleaner made for dolls. Bedsider says to skip dish soap and heavily scented or oily soaps. Irontech and Zelex both say to avoid alcohol, bleach and strong detergents. Rinse off every trace afterward.

Can you shower or bathe with a TPE sex doll?

Yes, a lukewarm rinse in the shower is fine, and it’s the easy way to clean a torso. Irontech says not to soak a doll unless she’s fully waterproof, so a long bath is out for most dolls. Keep the head and neck joint out of the water, and pull any electronics first. Then dry her fully, inside and out.

Wash at night, powder in the morning.

Cheers, Craig
