Are Sex Dolls Worth It? The Honest Math on Cost, Space and Cleaning
On this page
Are sex dolls worth it? For most guys, yes, as long as the first doll is a torso. A $400 torso that lasts two years works out to about $200 a year. A full-size is only worth it once you’ve got a private room and you already know you’re into this.
The price is the easy part. What decides it is the weight, the box and the clean-up after every round.
Are sex dolls worth it? The cost-per-year test
Divide the price by the years you’ll realistically use it. That’s the cost-per-year test, and it’s the only fair way to compare a $110 stroker with a $1,000 doll.
One thing I won’t fake: no maker publishes a lifespan I’d stake my name on, and the numbers on random blogs are bullshit with no source behind them. How long a doll lasts comes down to how you clean it, dry it and store it. So the table below shows three what-ifs.
A stroker is the handheld kind: a sex toy you hold in one hand, no body. Prices are from the listings in October 2026, all with free US shipping at the time.
Heads up, I make a few bucks if you buy through my links. Doesn’t change what I tell you, and I’ll tell you to skip stuff all day.
| What you buy | Price (USD) | If it lasts 1 year | 2 years | 4 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reusable stroker, 17.1 oz | $109.99 at Tenga | $110 | $55 | $27.50 |
| TPE torso, 27.3 lb (12.4 kg) | $399.99 at Tantaly | $400 | $200 | $100 |
| Full-size TPE, 5’2” (158 cm), 70.6 lb (32 kg) | $599 sale ($1,199 regular) at SexDollPartner | $599 ($1,199) | $300 ($600) | $150 ($300) |
| Half-body TPE, 68.3 lb (31 kg), sold as “full size” | $989.99 at Tantaly | $990 | $495 | $248 |
These are my estimates, from the listed price alone. Add lube and cleaning bits. If the doll ships from outside your country, add duty and tax too. My landed cost calculator works that out in one number.
Look at that full-size row twice. On sale, a 5’2” doll costs less than the half-body. At the regular price, it costs more. A 50% “sale” is one I’d check again next week. Either way, the weight and the clean-up matter more than the sticker.
For the full price spread by type and material, see my breakdown of what dolls really cost.
What each type costs you, by budget
Under $150, it’s a stroker. Around $400, it’s a torso. Past $600, you’re choosing between a full-size and a bigger half-body.
Under $150: a stroker
The one in the table weighs about a pound. The listing shows it flipping open to wash, with slide arms that double as a drying stand.
It’s worth it if you’ve never owned a sex toy and want to find out cheap. Start with my guide to pocket pussies and see if you even want more.
Around $400: a torso
A torso doll is chest to hips, no legs, sometimes with a head. The one in the table is 27.3 lb (12.4 kg). You can carry that one-handed and store it on a closet shelf.
For a first doll, this is the one that’s worth the money. You get the parts you actually use, at well under half the weight of a full-size. My torso doll page goes through what to look for.
$600 and up: full-size or half-body
A full-size doll is the whole body, head to feet. It’s the most realistic, and it’s a pain in the ass to move. The 5’2” doll in the table is listed at 70.6 lb (32 kg), and that’s on the short, light end.
It’s worth it once you’ve owned a torso and you’ve got the room. Otherwise, wait.
One naming trap: Tantaly sells that 68.3 lb doll as “full size”, but it’s a half-body, 83 cm (2’9”) overall. Read the measurements, not the product title.
The costs that aren’t on the price tag
The weight and the box matter more than the price. Here they are in numbers.
| Torso (27.3 lb) | Half-body (68.3 lb) | Full-size, 5’3” (86 lb) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box size | 22.2 x 17.5 x 11.4 in | 36.1 x 17.9 x 13.3 in | about 58 x 15 x 11 in (148 x 38 x 28 cm) |
| Over 51 lb? | No | Yes | Yes |
| One-handed carry? (my call) | Yes | No | No |
The torso and half-body box sizes come from the same Tantaly listings as the price table. The full-size one is the carton on a 5’3” TPE doll’s listing, a heavier doll listed at 86 lb (39 kg).
The weight
Most guys shouldn’t lift more than about 51 lb (23 kg) on their own, and that’s a load with handles, held close. A floppy doll has no handles.
Every full-size I found listed is over that, and the weight spread by doll type shows it’s not bad luck. You’ll carry her to the shower after every round, and if that sounds like a chore now, it’ll be a bigger one in six months.
The cleaning
Every use means a proper clean. Tantaly’s cleaning and care guide says to clean the tunnel right after use, keep the water under 50°C (122°F) and pat the skin dry.
It also says to take the drying stick out after 30 minutes at most, because a damp tunnel grows mould. If mould shows up, Tantaly says to stop using the doll. That’s how you lose a doll early.
TPE, the soft rubbery plastic most budget dolls use, is porous. Tantaly says so itself, which is why it soaks up dye from dark clothes and needs the extra care. My doll cleaning guide walks through the whole routine.
Do owners regret it? What they say once the box is open
Some do. In the r/SexDolls threads I read, the regret is about weight, money they can’t get back, and the first few days of feelings. And it shows up at set times. u/redditlolwjs, with a doll of almost 90 lb: “During the experience you don’t feel any of the regret, it’s before and after the fact, that you do.” Next time, they’d buy a half-body.
- The doll becomes a weekend event. u/PhapPhoenix says their heavy full-size only gets pulled out when there’s a whole weekend free. Use a $599 doll once a month and year one costs you about $50 a use. Buy the weight you’d still drag out on a Tuesday.
- A heavy torso, sold off. u/sugoi_hotdog paid close to $800 for a thick torso of about 70 lb, could barely get it off the ground, and sold it, asking $550 shipped. Torsos run from 27 lb to 70 lb, so when I say start with a torso, I mean a light one. Read the weight before the photos.
Not everyone regrets it. u/Popular-Turnip3031 says an 88 lb doll felt heavy at first, then didn’t, with no regrets.
The feelings are the other surprise. In a thread from a first-time owner who felt shame right after, the owners who replied mostly said give it time. u/Inevitable-Finger-99: “There was definitely an adjustment period to having my doll and accepting the fact that I am now a sex doll owner.” u/Draug88: “One time of anything is often not enough time to come to a full conclusion of one’s feelings and get a full understanding of them.”
Reports conflict here too. u/zwordfishfarley never felt shame at all, and u/DisasterLeast4997 says the doll takes their mind off bills, work and family drama. My call: don’t sell anything in the first week. If the low mood sticks around after that, it’s one for your doctor.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you’ve got no private space or no spare money. A doll is a big, heavy thing that needs a home and a budget that can take the hit.
- Roommates, or family who drop by unannounced. A 58-inch box and a doll drying in your bathroom are hard to explain. Get a stroker.
- A walk-up and a bad back. I wouldn’t carry anything over 51 lb up stairs alone. Get a torso.
- The money is rent money. Don’t put a doll on a credit card. A $110 stroker can wait for a better month.
- You’re hoping it fixes feeling lonely. A doll is a sex toy. It’s great at that job and useless at the other one. If you’re feeling low, talk to your doctor or someone you trust. If it’s heavier than a bad week, the 988 Lifeline takes calls and texts in the US, and 9-8-8 does the same in Canada.
- You’ve never owned a sex toy. Skip the doll for now. Start with a stroker and find out what you like first.
So are sex dolls worth it for a guy with his own place and some spare cash? I’d say yes. I’m single by choice, I’ve got the spare room, and for me it’s been worth every cent.
What fits a small apartment
Are sex dolls worth it in a small apartment? Only the torso. It ships in a box under two feet long and fits on a closet shelf.
A full-size needs floor space, a closet or a hook, and a clear path to the shower. If you’re in a bachelor or a one-bedroom with a tiny bathroom, that’s a daily hassle. My notes on storing a doll cover hanging, laying flat and keeping her out of sight.
The mistake most guys make
They buy the full-size first, open it, and find out they can’t send it back. Once it’s used, it’s yours. That’s the real answer to whether sex dolls are worth it for a first-timer: only if you start small.
Check the seller’s terms before you buy, but here’s what two of them say. Tantaly only takes returns on products that are unopened and unused, within 14 days, and keeps 15% as a fee. SexDollPartner doesn’t accept returns of opened items, and it won’t take a doll back because it’s too heavy or too big.
Read that last bit again. Too heavy came up more than anything else in the owner threads I read, and no seller will refund it.
Even cancelling costs you. u/Spiderboyz1 says cancelling a made-to-order doll mid-build would have got back only 80% of about $2,000, so roughly $400 gone. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, not after.
So the first doll is a bet. Make it a $400 bet. Finding out a $1,000 doll isn’t for you is a shitty way to learn. If the torso is worth it to you after a year, you’ll know exactly what to look for in a full-size, and you’ll still have the torso.
FAQs
Should I buy a sex doll?
Buy one if you’ve got a private spot to keep it, a budget that isn’t rent money, and you’re fine cleaning it after every use. If you’ve never owned a sex toy, start with a stroker around $110. If you have, a torso around $400 is the safest first doll. Hold off on a full-size until you know you’re into it, because the sellers I checked won’t take an opened doll back.
How long do sex dolls last?
There’s no reliable number. No maker I’ve checked publishes a lifespan I’d trust. It comes down to care. Tantaly’s care guide blames skin peeling on bad maintenance or too much cleaning. So clean it right after use, dry it fully, and follow the storage notes from whoever made it. A doll put away wet won’t last long.
Are expensive sex dolls worth it?
Not as your first one. A pricier doll is a bigger bet, the sellers I checked won’t take an opened one back, and you don’t know yet what you like. Buy a torso first, use it for a while and learn what matters to you, whether that’s weight, material or the face. Then spend the big money once, on the right doll.
Is it bad to have a sex doll?
No. It’s a sex toy for adults, and owning one is nobody’s business but yours. The only bad sex doll is one built to look like a child, which I’ll never cover here. Practically, a doll is bad for you only if it eats money you need or stays wet in a closet. If it’s tied up with feeling down, talk to your doctor.
Run the cost-per-year test before you hit buy. It’s cheaper per year than my Leafs habit, and it breaks my heart a lot less.
Cheers, Craig
